Idaho Falls Area NEEDS STATEMENT
Habitat for Humanity International® is dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Habitat Idaho Falls Area, Inc. was founded on Nov. 1, 1994. The first house was completed on November 3, 1995. We have built 24 homes to date.
Our constituents are households who otherwise would not be able to afford a conventional home loan. We are the only organization building affordable housing for families in the 25-50 percent of median income households in Idaho.
The Idaho Housing and Finance Association reports that 13,446 households in Eastern Idaho cannot find affordable housing, defined as no more than 30 percent of a household's gross income. Only 7 percent of these can get government subsidies. The waiting list for Idaho Housing is now at 18 months. Simply stated there are not enough affordable housing units available in Idaho.
Idaho ranks 16th in the country for housing need based on a Fair Market Rent of $582 and a two-bedroom apartment housing wage of $11.20. A person working for minimum wage would need to work 79 hours a week to afford the fair market rent. Rental properties in the Idaho Falls area that cost less than $400 a month are difficult to find.
Habitat for Humanity® helps households to own their own home for less than the price of renting. House payments for homes built by Habitat in the Idaho Falls area are estimated to be approximately $380 per month (including taxes and insurance) and are affordable for households with annual incomes as low as $12,000.
